Norman Nodge – Berghain 06 [Ostgut Ton]

Relativement moins connu que les autres DJs estampillés «Berghain», Norman Nodge est aux commandes du sixième opus de la série homonyme du club berlinois. Figure atypique de cette scène, la musique est loin d’être pour lui une activité à temps complet. Avocat, père de famille, sa carrière de DJ commence dans les années 90. Il la mettra en pause pendant quelques années avant de reprendre en 2005, lors de l’ouverture du Berghain dont il devient résident.

Le set commence dans une ambiance douce avec l’une des trois exclusivités de la sortie, Gase de Birds Two Cage. Progressivement et avec application, Nodge amène une certaine tension dans son mix. Tout d’abord en introduisant des percussions signées Oni Ayhum, mais surtout avec From Foreign Territories, track exclusif produit par Patrick Graeser, et Morning de Staffan Linzatti, qui contribuent à faire monter la pression d’un cran. Dès lors, la machine Nodge semble parfaitement lancée et le déferlement de bombes commence avec Keeping Of The Kept de Jeff Mills et Untitled A1 de Silent Servant.

Il est alors temps pour Nodge de nous faire perdre la raison. Dans un décor industriel et sombre, caractéristique de ce fameux «son Berghain», il enchaine les pistes où les rythmiques nerveuses s’unissent parfaitement à un groove destiné à vous faire danser. Le très sombre The Nighttripper de Tone Explotation (Planerary Assault Systems Remix) est suivi d’un track de Charlton particulièrement brutal, Black Slong. Architectural par Looking Ahead et Vault 5 de Mark Broom, la dernière exclusivité de ce Berghain 06, sont comme des vagues qui retombent pour mieux s’élever par la suite. Finalement, l’intensité atteint son paroxysme et le mix explose dans un concert singulier de sons et scratchs avec Roundabouts de Chancellor datant de 1997.

Le récit ne s’arrête pas là et reprend adroitement avec un sample de rap de New York Minds des vétérans Tim Taylor et DJ Slip, précédant le morceau d’El Gato #9 qui nous replace dans une ambiance similaire à celle du début du set. Nasty Radio de Radioactive Man laisse entrevoir une légère lueur dans une obscurité auparavant quasi totale, Norman Nodge décide alors de nous faire perdre totalement pied en lançant un lumineux Rainy Day Juno Jam de Xosar. Ce morceau de fin est un peu la marque spéciale de Nodge, un DJ capable de jouer au Berghain pendant une dizaine d’heures et d’envoyer Unfinished Sympathy de Massive Attack.

Berghain 06 est un exercice parfaitement maîtrisé. En une heure, Norman Nodge parvient à y déployer toute sa force narrative. Parti d’une base douce et mélodieuse, il construit au fil des morceaux une atmosphère tendue et de plus en plus sinistre qui finit par exploser, l’occasion pour lui de recoller les morceaux et de terminer sur une note harmonieuse.

On retrouve dans ce mix ce qui à notre sens fait sa spécificité, cette capacité à mélanger subtilement morceaux intenses, de toutes époques ; et cette volonté d’amener des sonorités sortant de l’ordinaire. Ce qui nous amène à évoquer un seul regret à l’écoute de ce Berghain 06, il aurait peut-être pu aller encore plus loin dans cette démarche.

Relatively low profile compared to the other DJs bearing the Berghain name, Norman Nodge is in control of the sixth opus of the homonymous series of the Berliner club. Unorthodox figure in this scene, music is far from being a full time job for him… Lawyer as well as father, his DJ career scales back to the 90s and paused for a few years before resuming in 2005, when Berghain opened its doors and got him back in the game as a resident.

Berghain 06 begins in a mellow mood with one of the 3 unreleased tracks of the album, Birds Two Cage’s “Gase”. Gradually with painstaking care for the dynamics of the music, Nodge brings about a certain tension in his set. First by introducing percussions with an Oni Ayhum’s track, but especially with exclusive track “From Territories” by Patrick Graeser and Staffan Linzatti’s “Morning” which shift the pressure to another level.

At this moment, the machine Nodge seems to have perfectly initiated and the dropping of bombs begins. Jeff Mills’s “Keeping of the Kept”, and “Untitled A1” from Silent Servant are sent in for one of the peaks of the album. It is now time for Nodge to make us loose our minds. In an industrial and dark setting, distinctive of the famous “Berghain Sound”, he carries on with tracks in which nervous beats unite perfectly with a groove designed to make you dance; the very dark Tone Explotation’s (Planetary Assault Systems Remix) “The Nightripper” is followed by the particularly brutal “Black Slong” by Carlton. Looking Ahead’s“Architectural”, and the last exclusive track of this Berghain, Mark Broom’s “Vault 5” are like waves falling down to elevate themselves higher.

Eventually, the intensity reaches its paroxysm and the mix explodes in a singular concert of scratches and sounds with “Roundabouts” by Chancellor dating from 1997. Nevertheless, the narrative does not end here and resumes skilfully with a sample of hip hop contained on “New York Minds” by veterans Tim Taylor and DJ Slip, preceding a piece of El Gato #9 which transports us back to a similar atmosphere as the one in the beginning of the set. Radioactive Man’s “Nasty Radio” lets us glimpse at an elusive faint light in the obscurity, Norman Nodge then decides to make us totally loose our bearings, hailing in a bright “Rainy Day Juno Jam” (Legowelt Remix). This last track is somehow a special move of Nodge, a DJ capable of playing Berghain for 10 hours and then suddenly dropping Massive Attack’s “Unfinished Sympathy”.

Recorded live in Berghain, 06 is a perfectly put together work. Within the space of an hour, Norman Nodge manages to deploy all his narrative strength. Starting with a melodic base, he builds up a great tension and an increasingly sinister atmosphere which eventually blows up, creating the opportunity for him to pick up the pieces and to end on an harmonious note. In this instalment we can see what makes him unique, namely his ability to subtly mix intense music from every style and era; in addition his willingness to bring in unexpected soundscapes from outside the ordinary boundaries of the genre. That makes me evoke my only regret after listening to Berghain 06: he could have gone further with this approach.
