Interview Adam X [Sonic Groove, L.I.E.S.]

Peu avant la sortie de Coherent Abstractions, le troisième album d’ADAM X sous son pseudonyme expérimental ADMX-71 ; nous avons pu poser quelques questions à cette légende de New York, pionnier de la techno industrielle, ancien graffeur recherché par la police, et boss du label Sonic Groove.

Tu vis à Berlin depuis longtemps, mais je pense que le crew L.I.E.S. a vraiment une attitude New-Yorkaise dans laquelle tu te reconnais. Que penses tu de ce label ? Lorsqu’on écrit Adam X, doit-on écrire Adam X [Sonic Groove, L.I.E.S.] ?

Tu viens de taper dans le mille. Ron (Morelli) et moi avons une excellente connexion. Il est sans aucun doute l’une de mes personnalités favorites sur la scène musicale. Nous avons tous deux une esthétique old school New York : de respecter notre parole et de dire ce en quoi nous croyons. Il y a donc un grand respect mutuel. Travailler ensemble nous va parfaitement. Je trouve aussi le label passionnant, on ne sait jamais ce qui va sortir : un disque techno, house, electro, etc. Je préfère la diversité et L.I.E.S. est l’un des labels les plus variés.

L’année dernière tu sortais Irreformable en tant qu’Adam X. Cet album était une sorte d’ode à tes racines de pionnier de la techno industrielle. Quand es-tu retourné en studio avec l’idée d’un nouvel album ? Comment s’effectue le changement entre les pseudonymes et les genres ? Est-ce que cela vient naturellement, est-ce un besoin de faire un truc entièrement différent lorsque tu as terminé quelque chose ?

J’ai travaillé sur le nouvel album d’ADMX-71 pendant tout l’hiver et le début du printemps de cette année. Irreformable a été enregistré à l’hiver et au printemps 2014. Il y a donc eu plusieurs mois de pause entre ces deux projets. La cause du changement de pseudonymes est que j’apprécie créer de la musique pour danser, mais aussi de la musique qu’on peut écouter en dehors du contexte des clubs. J’ai beaucoup de choses à dire musicalement et cela vient vraiment naturellement. Je préfère ne pas essayer d’entasser toutes ces idées dans un seul projet.

Je trouve Coherent Abstractions plutôt impressionnant, et d’une certaine façon j’ai vraiment été touché, ce qui est assez rare. J’ai le sentiment que c’est un album très personnel avec beaucoup de toi-même dedans. Quelle est ton opinion à ce sujet ?

Je dis toujours que la musique que je compose est ma bande originale propre, celle de la vie que je mène. Par exemple le morceau sur Coherent Abstrations intitulé MGM-41-85 a été créé le jour du trentième anniversaire de l’assassinat de mon père en 1985. Je me suis assis et j’ai enregistré dans la pénombre avec seulement une bougie brûlant en sa mémoire. Donc oui il y a des moments très personnels sur cet album. Tous les morceaux que j’écris n’ont pas un sens aussi profond pour moi, mais il y a toujours une vision ou un souvenir qui revient dans le processus d’écriture.

As-tu prévu une tournée en tant qu’ADMX-71 ?

Il n’y pas de plan prévu pour une tournée complète. ADMX-71 live est quelque chose que je préfère garder pour des évènements spéciaux comme Atonal, Mutek, Unsound, et d’autres festivals avec des lieux plus petits qui s’adressent aux sonorités expérimentales. Ce n’est pas quelque chose que je veux jouer dans un club ou un festival qui passe de la musique dancefloor.

On peut s’attendre à quoi le 11 à Nantes ? As-tu des morceaux que tu aimes particulièrement en ce moment ?

Je prévois de jouer une gamme large de techno comme toujours. Industrielle, acid, broken beat, un peu d’old school, beaucoup de new school old avec comme thème commun d’être deep, dark, et hard ! Je vais jouer beaucoup de sorties Sonic Groove récentes et quelques unes des prochaines : Max Durante, Northern Structures, Henning Baer et le prêt à paraître Diagenetic Origin. J’ai aussi hâte de dropper le nouveau AX&P que Perc et moi venons de terminer. Il va arriver début 2016 mais ceux qui seront présents vont pouvoir en avoir un aperçu en avance

Ahead of the release of Adam X third album under his experimental guise ADMX-71, we have caught up with the NYC legend for a few questions about L.I.E.S. and his new LP Coherent Abstractions.

You have been living in Berlin for a while now, but I think the L.I.E.S. posse really has a New York attitude that you connect to. What do you think about the label, when we write Adam X, shall we write Adam X [Sonic Groove, L.I.E.S.]?

You hit the nail on the head. Ron (Morelli) and I connect very well. He is no doubt one of my favorite people in the music scene. We both have an old school NYC aesthetic of living up to our words on what we say and believe in. So there is a high mutual respect between one another. Working together is a perfect fit. I find the label to be exciting as well. You never know what is coming next. A techno record, house record, electro record ,etc. I prefer diversity and L.I.E.S. is one of the more diverse labels out there.

Last year you released Irreformable as Adam X. The LP was a sort of ode to your roots as a pioneer in industrial techno. When did you go back in the studio with the idea of releasing another LP? How does the switching between aliases (and genres) happen? Is it something that comes naturally, and is it like a need of doing something radically different after you have finished something?

I worked on the new ADMX-71 album throughout the Winter and early Spring of this year. Adam X “Irreformable” was recorded in the Winter and Spring of the 2014. So there was a several months studio break between working on both projects. The reason for switching between aliases is that I enjoy to make music for dancing and as well as music to listen to outside a club setting. I have a lot to say musically and it most definitely comes naturally. I’d rather not try to cram all these idea’s into one project.

I find the entire album quite impressive and somehow I really connect to it which is something quite rare. I have the feeling this is a very personal album with a lot of yourself in it. What’s your opinion about that?

I always say that the music I make is my own personal soundtrack to the life I live. For example the end song on “Coherent Abstractions” entitled “MGM-41-85” is a piece I wrote on the 30 anniversary of my father’s murder in 1985. I sat in the dark while recording with a only a candle burning in his memory. So yes there are some very personal moments on this album. Not every song I write has such deep meaning to me but there is always a vision or memory that comes into mind in the writing process..

Are you planning a tour as ADMX-71?

No plans for a full on tour. ADMX-71 live is something I prefer to keep for special events, like Atonal, Mutek, Unsound and other festivals of the like or smaller venues catering to experimental sounds. It is not something I want to play at a club or festival that is playing dancefloor music.

What can we expect on the 11th in Nantes? Any tracks you have been particularly fond of recently?

I plan on playing wide range of techno like I always do. Industrialized, acidic, broken beat, some old school , lot’s of new school old with the common theme of being deep , dark, & hard! I will be playing a lot of Sonic Groove releases from recent months and some forthcoming too. Max Durante, Northern Structures, Henning Baer and the forthcoming Diagenetic Origin. Also can’t wait to drop the new AX&P that Perc and I just finished. It will come out early 2016 but those on the night will get an early preview of it
