IS 257 – Ka§par [4 Lux, Midnight Shift]

Originaire du Portugal, Ka§par est un producteur et DJ qui a commencé sa carrière dans les années 90. Il a sorti plus d’une dizaine de disques au cours lors de la dernière décennie et a, entre autres, participé à la célèbre Red Bull Music Academy en 2005. Dans son actualité : un nouvel EP prêt à sortir chez le label basé à Singapour Midnight Shift, sur lequel on trouve une collaboration avec le musicien originaire de Detroit Jerry The Cat, et des remixes signés Kirk Degiorgio.

Tu sors un nouveau maxi pour Midnight Shift (Singapour), peux-tu me parler de ta relation avec ce label ? Quel a été ton premier contact avec lui ?

Mon amitié avec les deux belles personnes derrière le label date de 2012. J’appréciais vraiment le catalogue et nous avons eu un premier contact facile naturel. Au début nous avons parlé de musique, et nos interactions étaient agréables… Kavan a plein d’idées, Debbi est comme moi une ancienne étudiante de la Red Bull Music Academy de 2005, c’était très logique de leur demander ce qu’ils pensaient de mes morceaux. C’est parti de là pour arriver à maintenant…

Comment c’était de travailler avec Jerry The Cat ?

Jerry vit à Lisbonne depuis un moment et notre rencontre date de 2009. Que puis-je dire à propos de Jerry ? C’est une figure prophétique, un ami génial, quelqu’un avec du vécu qui en sait beaucoup sur la vie. Un musicien unique, spécial, autodidacte, un professeur de mathématiques, un grand esprit et un cœur encore meilleur. Être son ami est une bénédiction et un apprentissage continu, il est une des personnes qui comptent le plus pour moi et je regrette de ne pas le voir plus.
Il jouait des percussions pour Parliament/Funkadelic et des décennies plus tard il a sorti des disques fantastiques pour Sound Signature, Soirée, et il a joué sur les disques iconiques de KDJ. Il a tout juste commencé à chanter un peu par hasard ces dernières années à cause de son travail avec le groupe de rock Loosers… Lorsque je lui ai montré le morceau, je n’étais pas certain de ce qu’il verrait dedans. Initialement j’avais chanté mais je sentais que ce n’était pas correct. Cette chanson parle de se sentir aliéné, piégé par les limites de la société… Je savais que Jerry pourrait s’associer à ces sentiments.
Il a écouté et m’a dit que ça lui rappellait des trucs sur la bande originale d’une série des années 80 : « The Scene ». J’ai été très surpris, on a fait un enregistrement en une prise avec quelques ad-libs et des choeurs ensuite. Très rapide et propre. J’ai ensuite mixé le morceau du mieux que je pouvais pendant trois ans, et finalement je l’ai passé à Rune Zetterstrom pour le dernier tour. Il est important sur un tel morceau d’avoir quelqu’un qui vérifie le son une dernière fois et corrige ce qu’on ne peut plus détecter.

Est-ce que tu continues d’utiliser les pseudonymes de Moodyman ou Theo Parrish sur internet ?

Je suis impressionné par la recherche sur pour cette question J’ai utilisé le pseudo de Moodyman à l’époque de mIRC lorsque j’avais 17 ans, ça m’a permis de rencontrer un proche dont le nickname était « theo_parrish » (António Alves aka Jackzen du projet Ka§par Vs. Jackzen). Tout cela s’est produit dans des réseaux fermés sur des serveurs portugais au début d’internet à un moment où il n’y avait quasiment pas d’informations sur ces deux artistes. Cet ami a continué de mixer et produire pendant 15 ans, et s’est aussi occupé d’A&R pour des labels. Maintenant il travaille à Londres dans la mode, le design, et la photographie.

J’ai pu travailler au Portugal à plusieurs reprises cette année. J’ai eu la chance de pouvoir aller au Lux ainsi qu’au Forte Festival, et j’ai été très impressionné par la qualité des clubs et évènements. De ton point de vue intérieur à cette scène, que penses-tu de l’état de la musique électronique au Portugal ?

Lux-Frágil est un club légendaire avec une programmation exceptionnelle en Europe ainsi qu’un décor excellent. Il y a plus d’évènements et festivals dans le pays, et la scène est de nouveau forte avec de bons artistes qui sortent des disques et qui jouent partout dans le monde. Si on devait améliorer quelque chose, ce serait l’intégration et le soutien mutuel. En ce qui concerne les promoteurs, il y a simplement beaucoup d’importation et les bons artistes portugais ne jouent pas vraiment les festivals. Le Lux est une exception (comme quelques autres clubs), ils ont conscience des talents locaux et invitent la plupart d’entre eux avec une régularité saine. J’aimerais voir plus de locaux jouer plus souvent dans les plus grosses soirées.
D’un point de vue éditorial et artistique, beaucoup de choses sont en train de se passer. Je ne peux pas tout mentionner car ce serait injuste si j’en oubliais. Je pense quand même que les prochains qui vont exploser internationalement pourraient-être des gens comme Miguel Torga, Ludovic, et Gatupreto, mais cela dépend plus des journalistes que de leur talent.
C’est une période fascinante, c’est pourquoi j’ai commencé avec Joseph Salvador TINK ! Music et que j’ai repris le vieux label ici à Lisbonne plutôt qu’à Amsterdam. Nous nous focalisons sur des artistes qui sont pour la plupart portugais.

Peux-tu me parler un peu du mix ?

Presque entièrement vinyle, avec quelques promos joués sur une CDJ 1000. Mixé avec un Vestax PCM rotary. Pour moi… jouer un set comme celui-ci est un peu comme écrire un livre, tisser une narration… On gère l’ambiance, la tension, et leur relation. Comment on fait monter pour relâcher, ou comment les choses contrastent et surprennent. Je voulais faire une sélection avec un chemin, avec « des mains » précises dans le mix des disques. J’ai aussi visé à être au niveau des concepts et idées explorés dans mes derniers disques, un son plus sombre et plein, qui se tient quelque part entre ce que les gens nomment la techno, la house, l’electro, et la disco plus sombre… J’aimerais éviter trop d’adjectifs et d’étiquettes, pour ce que je souhaite être ressenti dans ce mix.

Pour finir, peux-tu nous dire quelques mots sur tes projets en cours et ce que tu prévois dans un futur proche ?

Je travaille principalement avec Midnight Shift, TINK! / Tomorrow Is Now, Kid! Et 4Lux / Clone, et nous avons fondé un studio, le Portland Sound Studios où j’ai des projets avec Joseph Salvador (j’aide pour la production et le mixage).
En tant que Ka§par j’explore des zones plus sombres en ce moment, je viens de faire ce disque pour Midnight Shift qui je pense est un changement de rythme intéressant. Nous parlons de faire un album technoid pour 2016, j’ai aussi un EP prêt à sortir pour TINK!, ainsi qu’un single digital nommé « Cry It Out » dans lequel j’explore une vibe synth disco / new wave. Cette sortie est aussi une expérimentation d’écriture et de chant, on va voir ce que les gens pensent mais je suis prêt à prendre le risque. Beaucoup de choses donc… Je suis motivé chaque jour, chaque seconde, et je dois le faire si je veux arriver à mes objectifs dans le futur !

You are releasing a new EP on Singapore Midnight Shift, can you tell me a little bit about your relationship with this label? How did you first come across it?

My friendship with the two fine people behind the label dates back to late 2012. I was feeling the label’s catalogue very much, we got in touch naturally. First we talked about music but our interaction was fun … Kavan was aware and full of ideas, Debbie was an ex-alumni of the RBMA class of 2005 as I was, it was a very natural step to ask them what they thought of a few tracks I had made. From the time they heard them until now, it’s history…

What about Jerry The Cat, how was it to work together on a track?

Jerry lives in Lisbon since a while, we met back in 2009. What can I say about Jerry? He’s a prophetic figure, a great friend, a well lived man that knows much about life and living. He’s a special, one of a kind, self-taught musician, an academic mathematics teacher, a great mind and better heart. To be his friend is a blessing and a continuous learning process, he’s one of the people I hold dearest and regret not seeing more of.
He played percussion for Parliament/Funkadelic and decades later released amazing records on Sound Signature, Soirée and played percussion on KDJ’s most iconic records. He only started singing out of chance in the last couple of years because of his successful work with rock band Loosers… finally, he’s one of my closest friends.
When I showed him the track, I wasn’t sure what he would see in it. I had initially sung the lyrics, but I felt my voice was not what I needed. The song is about feeling out of place and trapped, bound by the limits of society… and I knew Jerry could well relate to that.
He listened and said the track reminded him of the stuff that was soundtrack to 80’s TV Show « The Scene » – he said Cybotron actually, I was very surprised.
It was a first take recording, plus a few ad-libs and choruses after. Very quick and clean. I then mixed the track as best I could for over 3 years, finally handed it down to Rune Zetterstrom for the final lap. It’s important on a track like this to have someone go through the sound once more and correct what you could no longer detect.

Do you still go around the internet under the alias Moodyman or Theo Parrish?

A very well researched question I went under the alias Moodymann in the mIRC days, and met one of my closest friends when I was 17 because his nick name was « theo_parrish », (António Alves aka Jackzen from the Ka§par Vs. Jackzen project). This happened in the closed networks of Portuguese servers at a time when information on the internet about both these artists was none and they where still far from the fame they gathered in the meantime, so it was quite an unlikely event. We went on to dj together for almost 15 years, make records and handle A&R for labels for a long time. He since went on to work in London in fashion, design and photography and made quite a name for himself in those fields. What we experienced and lived through together will forever bond us, and it happened because of that episode !!

I actually worked in Portugal a couple of times this year and I had the chance to go to Lux and Forte Festival. I was quite impressed with the quality of the events/clubs I saw, from an insider point of view what do you think about the state of the electronic music scene in Portugal?

Lux-Frágil is a legendary club with some of the best music in Europe, amazing decor and . informed curation. There are more events and festivals around the country, the electronic scene is as strong as it ever was, with good artists releasing worldwide records and playing all over the world. If there’s anything to improve it’s the lack of overall integration and mutual support.
Regarding the promoters, there is simply a lot of import of talent and that the finest portuguese artists are not really playing in the festivals. Lux is an exception though (like a few other clubs) they are very aware of the local talent and invite most of the relevant artists, myself included, with healthy regularity. I would like to see more of the local people playing more visible slots in the bigger parties more often.
On an editorial and artistic level, there are great things happening indeed – I can’t go through it all as I think it will be unfair to anyone I can leave out. I believe the next acts to break through, at least in the international clubbing circuit, could well be people like Miguel Torga, Ludovic (Cloche / Umbra) and Gatupreto, but it depends more on the music journalists than on their own talent, of which there is more than enough.
It’s a very interesting time herel, that’s why me and Joseph Salvador started TINK! Music and revived the old TINK! Records imprint here in Lisbon and not in Amsterdam where the more house oriented Tomorrow Is Now, Kid! label is rooted, we are focused on original artists, most of them portuguese.

Can you tell us the idea behind the mix?

It’s almost entirely vinyl, with a few promos played on CDJ 1000. It was mixed with a Vestax PCM rotary.
To me… performing a set like this is like writing a book, weaving a narrative… you manage the mood and tension, and their relationship, how things build up and relax, or how things contrast and surprise. I wanted to do a selection that had a path to it, with precise « hands on » mixing of records. I also aimed to stand up for the concepts and ideas that I am exploring with my latest records, a darker and fuller sound, lying somewhere between what people will call techno, house, electro and darker disco… I would avoid too many adjectives and name tags, what I wish is that the mix be felt.

Lastly, can you give us a few words about your ongoing projects and what you are up to next?

I’m mostly working with Midnight Shift, TINK! / Tomorrow Is Now, Kid! and 4Lux / Clone, I have the Ka§par moniker going to darker zones lately, so I’ve been a part of a few other projects on TINK! Music, recorded in the studio we founded – Portland Sound Studios. Projects I work in with other people like Joseph Salvador (Black Tulip, Thyone Girls), where I help in mixing or producing (as with the Gatupreto duo and the newly signed wonder girl Sheri Vari ) have seen me dedicate a lot of time in their production and mixing – just as much as Ka§par.
I have last released in March on Housewax an EP called « Code Duello », and on TINK! we have released Gatupreto’s « Modo Di Trabadja » via Juno in April 2015 – a project that has a very peculiar Afro quality to it – and Black Tulip’s « Better Days » (on the more soulful, Paradise Garage side of things) has just been released via DBH. As Ka§par I have made this record « Sysiphean Rage » on Midnight Shift, which I feel is a very interesting change of pace. Regarding Midnight Shift, there are talks of a KA§PAR technoid album on the label around 2016, and there is a new Ka§par EP already mastered on TINK! for the first part of 2016 too.
I also have a digital single prepared for TINK! to be released in January called « Cry It Out » in which I explore a synth disco / new wave soul kind of vibe, with really good remixes – that release is an experiment in writing lyrics and performing vocally as well. Let’s see what people think, I’m willing to take the risk.
There are talks of a new Ka§par on 4Lux next year as well but that’s not finished at this point… so… a lot going on! I am motivated to work everyday, every second I can, I have to, if I am to get to where I want to be in the future!
